Wellington Street Remains Shut Down Until End of September, Delaying Reopening by a Month
Wellington Street in London, between Clarence Street and Wellington Street, will remain closed for an extended period until the end of October. This closure is part of the York Street Infrastructure Renewal Project, which started on July 2.
The closure, which began on the same day as the project, affects the underpass on Wellington Street and has resulted in the restriction of the Southern access to London's downtown. The intersection at Horton Street and Wellington Street remains open, but no northbound traffic is permitted through the intersection.
The York Street Infrastructure Renewal Project aims to replace old combined sewers to improve the health of the Thames River and increase sewer capacity for London's growing population. Some London motorists have expressed frustration with the closure, as it has complicated their route downtown.
Despite the closure, Londoners can access the west side of the downtown through the east side of the York and Wellington intersection for westbound travel from the east side of York Street. The eastern side of the York and Wellington intersection remains open for traffic.
The project is still ongoing, and the closure of Wellington Street between Horton and King Street is still in effect, affecting both directions of traffic, including the underpass. The projected opening date for the Southern access to London's downtown has been delayed and is not currently September 1.
