Whimsical Universe: Oddball Headlines from the Past Week

In Sweden, an 81-year-old woman named Madelein Mansson, better known as DJ Gloria, has been making waves by filling dance floors with over-50s. After the loss of her husband, she found herself listless and sad. However, her passion for music led her to start a 50+ disco with a friend, due to the lack of early evening clubs. Now, she plays at Sweden's hottest clubs with special early evening gigs, where ID cards are required.

Meanwhile, in Turkey, the Transport Minister, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, found himself in hot water after posting a video of himself racing down a new motorway. The video, which showed him reaching speeds of 225 km/h (140 mph), resulted in a speeding fine. Uraloğlu later wrote that he denounced himself with the video and will be more careful in the future.

In a more harrowing tale, a Chinese cleaner was trapped in a hotel room for 30 hours with no phone, food, water, toilet, or anyone to hear her cries when the door lock malfunctioned. Her message, written in blood on a pillowcase, was spotted by a food delivery driver, Zhang Kun.

Elsewhere, the son of Equatorial Guinea's president, Ruslan Obiang Nsue, has been found guilty of selling a plane belonging to the national airline and pocketing the cash. The aircraft, which costs around US$14 million new, is now missing. Obiang Mangue, the country's vice-president, put Ruslan Obiang Nsue under house arrest in 2023.

In a previous court case in 2021, Obiang Mangue himself was fined US$35 million and given a suspended jail sentence for embezzling public funds.

Uraloğlu was checking the Ankara-Nigde highway when he unintentionally exceeded the speed limit by 100 kph. The incident occurred on a new motorway, perhaps contributing to his momentary lapse in judgement.

In a positive turn of events, the Chinese cleaner's ordeal ended when her cries for help were finally heard. Her message, dropped from a sixth-floor window, alerted those below, leading to her rescue.

These stories serve as a reminder of the diversity of human experiences and the importance of adhering to rules, whether on the road or in financial dealings.
