Wildlife authorities, Game and Fish, are arranging a Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Sampling Workshop in Cheyenne.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is inviting the public to a free, hands-on training session on September 23, 2020, in Sheridan, Wyoming. This workshop aims to teach participants how to collect samples from harvested deer or elk for chronic wasting disease (CWD) monitoring.

The workshop, which will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Cheyenne headquarters, is open to anyone, not just hunters, taxidermists, and game meat processors. It is an opportunity for community members to directly contribute to the long-term health of Wyoming's big game populations through CWD monitoring.

Chronic wasting disease is a concern as it is a fatal disease that affects deer, elk, and moose. It poses a serious threat to wildlife in Wyoming and beyond. The disease's proper sample collection is essential for monitoring and understanding its spread.

The department is emphasizing the importance of CWD sample collection this year, particularly for deer hunters in southeast Wyoming. Sample collection is mandatory in deer hunt area 70 (Shirley Mountain) and highly recommended in deer hunt area 15 (Goshen Rim), where the department is monitoring the spread and prevalence of the disease.

The workshop will cover step-by-step techniques for collecting lymph node samples from harvested deer or elk. It will also provide instructions for safe handling and submission of the samples. All equipment required for the sample collection will be provided during the workshop.

For more information on CWD, visit the Wyoming Game and Fish CWD webpage. To attend, participants are asked to RSVP online or by emailing [email protected]. This event is a great opportunity for anyone interested in wildlife conservation or concerned about mule deer and chronic wasting disease.
