Wind Energy Project Nears Final Stages, Achieves 80% Completion

The Revolution Wind project, a 704 MW offshore wind farm, owned by Ørsted and Skyborn Renewables, is making steady progress in the United States. Despite facing some construction challenges, the project is on track for completion.

In the past, the project encountered issues such as a piling problem at the substation foundation due to seabed resistance and a damage to an installation vessel's leg, which required repairs and a brief halt in operations. However, these setbacks have not affected the project's timeline.

Last year, there was a delay in the construction of the onshore substation, causing its commercial operation date to be pushed back from 2025 to the second half of 2026. But, the installation of the offshore substation is scheduled to take place in the coming period, with Bokalift 2 and supporting vessels returning to the site on or around 22 August. White Marlin will transport the topside to the site for offshore substation installation.

The monopile for the offshore substation that was not suitable for use because of seabed resistance was successfully removed in the second quarter. A new monopile will be installed in the coming period.

The project has already installed 45 of the 65 turbines, and all foundations are in place. All 65 wind turbines are expected to be installed by the end of 2024. The first wind turbine was installed in September 2024, and nearly 70% of the turbines were installed during the second quarter of 2024.

The Revolution Wind project provides electricity to Connecticut and Rhode Island. Project energisation is expected early next year, and full commissioning of the project is scheduled for the second half of 2026. This commissioning marks an important milestone for the project, bringing clean, renewable energy to the region.

Despite the challenges faced, the Revolution Wind project continues to move forward, demonstrating the resilience and determination of the renewable energy sector in the face of adversity.
