Wintry conditions halt traffic movement, resulting in school buses being temporarily suspended in the South Pfalz region at midday
In the early hours of the morning, an ice storm swept across South Palatinate, causing widespread disruption to schools and public transport. The storm, which originated in Baden-Württemberg, moved northward overnight, reaching Rhineland-Palatinate by dawn.
The ice storm left thousands of students stranded, as bus traffic in large parts of the Palatinate region was disrupted. In Queichtal Verkehrsgesellschaft, icy windows prevented buses from running, leading to numerous students missing their morning classes. Schools in Landau and Annweiler quickly responded by offering online classes to ensure students could continue their education despite the disrupted transport.
The storm was not limited to the Palatinate region. Across Baden-Württemberg, several weather-related car accidents occurred by morning, highlighting the treacherous conditions on the roads. In Freiburg, slippery roads caused by the ice storm made travel difficult for many.
Attention is now turning to Frankfurt Airport, where no take-offs are possible due to the ice storm. The airport authorities are working hard to clear the runways and ensure flights can resume as soon as possible. However, the exact timeline for resumption of normal operations remains uncertain.
