Wisconsin confronts recurring quarterback injuries after Billy Edwards Jr. exits opening game

In a surprising turn of events, Wisconsin found themselves in a tough spot during their season-opener against Miami (Ohio) after starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. suffered a non-contact injury. However, the Badgers managed to secure a 14-3 victory, thanks in part to the impressive performance of backup quarterback Danny O'Neil.

O'Neil, a transfer from San Diego State, showed a feisty attitude and leadership after entering the game. His ability to bring energy and lead the team was evident in the way the players responded to him. Coach Fickell mentioned that O'Neil's confidence level is one of his strengths.

As a freshman starter for San Diego State in the previous season, O'Neil completed 63.3% of his passes for 2,181 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. Wisconsin signed him during the offseason to serve as a backup and potentially step in if Edwards Jr. was out longer due to injury.

The injury to Edwards follows previous season-ending injuries to Tanner Mordecai in 2023 and Tyler Van Dyke in 2022. Mordecai missed 3 1/2 games in 2023 due to a broken hand, and the Badgers finished the season with a 7-6 record. Van Dyke tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the third game of the 2022 season, ending his season prematurely, and Wisconsin finished the year with a disappointing 5-7 record, ending a streak of 22 straight winning seasons and bowl appearances.

Wide receiver Vinny Anthony expressed optimism about Edwards' situation after the game. Despite the interception by O'Neil in the third quarter, the Badgers attempted to go for it on fourth-and-3 from the 10, but the strategy went awry. O'Neil ended the game going 12 of 19 for 120 yards passing and also rushed for 13 yards on 11 carries.

The Badgers will wait to learn if Edwards Jr. is able to return for the next game against Middle Tennessee or if O'Neil will need to continue leading the team. Wisconsin added two quarterbacks during the offseason who had started for Bowl Subdivision teams in the previous season, with O'Neil being one of them.

Despite the challenges, the Badgers are determined to bounce back and continue their winning tradition. The team will rely on the leadership and skills of both O'Neil and Edwards Jr. as they move forward in the season.
