Wisconsin secures win over Miami (Ohio) with robust defensive effort despite Edwards' injury, resulting in a 17-0 outcome.

In the season opener for both teams, the Wisconsin Badgers emerged victorious against Miami (Ohio) with a score of 17-0. The game, played without any spectators due to a weather-related decision, saw a new quarterback for each team take the field.

For the Badgers, Preston Zachman intercepted two passes during the game, one of which set up a first-and-goal situation. The other interception came in the fourth quarter, further solidifying Wisconsin's lead.

Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. suffered a lower-body injury in the second quarter and did not return for the rest of the game. Danny O'Neil took over the role and delivered a strong performance, going 12 of 19 for 120 yards. He scored a 1-yard rushing touchdown and threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Vinny Anthony.

Miami (Ohio) started a new quarterback, Dequan Finn, who was 9 of 18 for 83 yards with two interceptions. The RedHawks struggled on offense, rushing for only 34 yards on 22 carries and gaining only 117 yards during the game. They also failed to convert on any of their nine third-down attempts.

Nathanial Vakos made a 42-yard field goal to put Wisconsin ahead for good late in the first quarter. Wisconsin scored again after forcing another punt, putting the game away in the fourth quarter.

Wisconsin ended their 2024 season with a disappointing five-game losing streak, ending a string of 22 straight winning seasons and bowl appearances. This victory marks a positive start for the Badgers as they look forward to hosting Middle Tennessee on Sept. 6. Miami (Ohio), who won the Arizona Bowl last season, will visit Rutgers on the same date, having returned no starters on offense for this game.

No further information about the nature or severity of the quarterback's injury was provided for either team. It is unclear if any starters on Wisconsin's offense were injured during the game.
