With the approaching World Cup, Doha showcases its rich cultural heritage
The city of Doha, Qatar, is gearing up for a cultural revolution. Two exciting new additions to its vibrant arts scene are on the horizon, as the Art Mill Museum (AMM) and Lusail Museum prepare to open their doors.
The Art Mill Museum, currently housed in the mill's warehouse, is part of an ongoing special exhibition titled "Art Mill 2030." Inspired by the existing structures of the Qatar Flour Mill, particularly the silos, the museum's design reflects the rich industrial heritage of the location. The Qatar Flour Mill, while still operational, will be retired before 2030 to make way for the museum.
In the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Doha later this month, Qatar Creates, a cultural movement managed by Qatar Museums, is organizing accompanying programming for the tournament.
The AMM will boast approximately 23,000 square meters of exhibition space, providing ample room for the works of six artists, including Mohammed Kamal Al Emadi and Amal Al Muftah. Al Muftah's film, featuring her grandmother wandering the silos and warehouse as an avatar of the unheralded women's work of kneading dough, is a poignant reminder of the connection between the back-breaking work of flour processing and the upcoming Art Mill Museum.
Meanwhile, Lusail Museum, due to break ground in 2030 on Al Maha Island, will focus on Orientalist art. The museum's upcoming exhibition, "Tales of a Connected World," includes 247 objects spanning paintings, drawings, sculpture, and photography. Shaima Al-Tamimi, a Yemeni and Kenyan artist, is one of the contributors, with her work focusing on the impact of migration on culinary culture through photographs of breads baked in Qatar.
Doha is undergoing a significant transformation, with government-funded projects aimed at making it a destination for the jet-setting class. The city already boasts cultural landmarks such as the Museum of Islamic Art, a vast blue-chip public art park, and the National Museum of Qatar.
As the world's eyes turn to Doha for the FIFA World Cup, the city's burgeoning arts scene offers a captivating glimpse into its past, present, and future. The Art Mill Museum and Lusail Museum are set to become significant additions to this rich cultural tapestry.
