Woman from the United States faces charges for registering her dog to vote in two elections, with allegations totaling five felonies.
A 62-year-old woman from Costa Mesa, California, has been charged with five felonies for allegedly registering her dog, Maya Jean Yourex, to vote and submitting two ballots in her name during the 2021 California gubernatorial recall election and the 2022 primary election.
The charges were announced by the Orange County District Attorney's office on Friday. Laura Lee Yourex is accused of casting two ballots in the name of her dog, Maya Jean Yourex.
According to the District Attorney's office, Yourex registered Maya Jean Yourex to vote and two mail-in ballots were cast in the dog's name. One of the ballots was counted, while the second was rejected.
The Orange County Registrar of Voters office self-reported the incident in late October, after they discovered that a resident had registered a dog to vote and cast mail-in ballots in its name.
In January 2022, Yourex posted photos on social media showing her dog with an "I voted" sticker. In October 2024, she posted a photo of a vote-by-mail ballot, even though Maya Jean Yourex had passed away by that time.
Yourex is scheduled to appear in Westminster Superior Court on Tuesday. If found guilty, she may enter a plea to two counts of casting a ballot when not entitled to vote, and one count each of perjury, procuring or offering a false or forged document to be filed, and registering a non-existent person to vote.
Maya Jean Yourex was registered to vote in the 2021 California gubernatorial recall election of California Governor Gavin Newsom and in the 2022 primary election. This incident highlights the importance of maintaining the integrity of the voting process and the consequences of attempting to manipulate it.
