Woman's kidnapping video wrongfully circulated online, originally from Ecuador but misrepresented as an Indian event

On the streets of Ruiz de Castilla and Aldana, in the La América and Las Casas sector, north of Quito, a shocking incident occurred on 26 September 2024. A viral video, now circulating on social media, captured the moment a woman was kidnapped in the Las Casas area of northwestern Quito.

The video, which was later uploaded by Ecuadorian media outlet Radio Pichincha on their X handle on 27 September 2024, shows a man approaching the woman with flowers before forcefully pushing her into a black car without license plates. The disturbing incident prompted immediate action from locals who tried to intervene and chase the vehicle.

Local media confirmed the incident, with several Ecuadorian news outlets reporting the kidnapping on 26 September 2024. Multiple news outlets also confirmed that the incident occurred in Ecuador, dispelling the false claim that it took place in India.

The city in Ecuador that indicates the geographic origin of the kidnapping victim shown in the video is likely Quito, the capital located in the Andean highlands (Sierra), or Guayaquil, the largest city situated in the Pacific coastal region (Costa). However, the specific location of the incident was confirmed to be in Quito.

Following the incident, the woman was later released in Chillogallo, south of the capital. The CCTV footage of the kidnapping has raised concerns about safety in the city and has sparked a discussion about the need for increased security measures.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to the police. The viral video serves as a stark reminder of the importance of personal safety and the need to support one another in times of crisis.
