Woodworking masterpiece portrays Morteza Khazaie's tale of endurance titled Upside Down
=====================================================================
Morteza Khazaie's latest exhibition, "Upside Down," is currently on display at Leila Heller Gallery and runs until September 15. The Iranian artist, known for extracting metaphor from wood, has created a thought-provoking collection of human-form sculptures that range from serene to painful in their expressions.
Curator Farshad Mahoutforoush wanted to explore how softness can be strength through these works. The material of the sculptures underscores this resilience found in nature, with each piece slender and life-sized, reminiscent of the adaptability of trees.
The necks of Khazaie's figures twist and bend in impossible lengths and angles, inspired by the shapes of trees. This is further emphasised by the use of wood, which carries a sense of growth and history, as well as a symbol of Thoreau's beacons of morality and grandeur.
Thoreau, a 19th-century American philosopher, was observant of trees and wrote about their ability to withstand seismic change. Khazaie's sculptures embody this juxtaposition between pliability and strength, with deliberate details that suggest weathering through hardship, such as fragments bolted and nailed together.
The sculptures in the exhibition symbolize how trees endure without breaking by adapting to natural forces like winds and storms. The use of the title "Upside Down" symbolizes seeing things differently, and the pieces continue to have a timeless quality.
The curator for the exhibition is Mona Noori, and the exhibition, "Upside Down," by Morteza Khazaie is not to be missed. Visit Leila Heller Gallery before September 15 to experience this unique and thought-provoking exhibition.
