World Cup Bound: DLV Fields 79 Players for Tokyo Tournament
The Athletics World Championships in Tokyo have been marked by a controversial new development - a mandatory genetic test for women participating in the competition. World Athletics (WA) has implemented this test, which is not about genetic or DNA information, as stated by WA President Sebastian Coe, but rather a verification of female biology.
The test is for the SRY gene, which is part of the Y chromosome and causes the development of male characteristics. Only athletes with a negative test result will be eligible to compete in women's categories at World Ranking competitions.
The implementation of these tests has received mixed reactions. While World Athletics President Sebastian Coe reported "overwhelming support" for the tests, the German Athletics Association (DLV) has expressed criticism about the introduction and process of the tests.
Among the athletes who have criticized the tests is Malaika Mihambo, the Tokyo Olympics long jump champion. Mihambo, who also won gold at the Tokyo Olympics, has stated that the tests are legally questionable, ethically delicate, and scientifically rushed.
The athletes participating in events such as the 100m, 200m, 4x100m, 4x400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m, 400m Hurdles, 3000m Steeplechase, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Shot Put, Discus Throw, Hammer Throw, Heptathlon, and Decathlon for both the men's and women's teams have been listed.
Notable athletes include decathlete Leo Neugebauer, 100m sprinter Owen Ansah, high jumper Christina Honsel, and Malaika Mihambo herself. The men's team also includes athletes such as Aaron Bienenfeld, Eva Dieterich, and Samantha Borutta, while the women's team includes athletes like Yemisi Ogunleye, the Olympic champion in shot put, and world record-breaking javelin thrower Julian Weber.
As of recently, over 90% of the athletes in Tokyo have completed the test. The German Athletics Association (DLV) has announced a total of 79 German athletes participating in the Athletics World Championships in Tokyo.
The controversy surrounding the genetic tests in the athletics world championships continues to generate debate, with stakeholders on both sides advocating for their respective positions. As the competition progresses, it will be interesting to see how this issue unfolds.
