Tragedy in Lisbon: Elevator Accident Causes 15 Deaths and 18 Injuries
In a shocking turn of events, a tragic accident occurred in Lisbon, Portugal on Wednesday evening, September 3, 2025. The Elevador da Glória derailed and crashed into a building on Gloria Street, resulting in 15 deaths and 18 injuries, five of them severe and 13 minor.
The Portuguese Government has declared a day of national mourning on Thursday, and a memorial service is scheduled for the day after the accident. The date of the state mourning and the memorial service is September 4, 2025.
The Lisbon City Council has declared that the city is "in mourning". The Portuguese Football Federation associates with the grief and consternation caused by the tragic accident. Inês de Sousa Real, spokesperson for PAN, expressed sincere condolences to the families of those who died in the accident. The Socialist Party expressed profound sorrow for the tragedy in Lisbon. The Bloco de Esquerda and Livre also expressed solidarity with the accident victims.
Leaders from other countries have also shown their support. Pedro Sánchez, the leader of the Spanish Government, expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and the Portuguese people. Brazil expresses solidarity with the Government and people of Portugal. Giorgia Meloni, the leader of the Italian government, left a message of support to Portugal.
