World's Largest Single-Capacity Turbine Installed on Dongfang's Website for Trials
In a significant leap for renewable energy, Dongfang Electric Corporation has developed and installed a colossal 26 MW wind turbine near Fujian, China, in 2024. The turbine, boasting a rotor diameter of over 310 meters and blades measuring 153 meters in length, is a testament to China's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
The turbine, composed of over 30,000 components, was rolled off the production line in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, and installed without any reported difficulties during installation. It stands nearly 200 meters tall and has a rotor sweep of 77,000 square meters, making it a formidable presence in the wind energy landscape.
The turbine employs third-generation fully integrated semi-direct drive technology, which enhances its efficiency and reliability. To combat corrosion, the turbine is fully sealed, preventing salt spray corrosion, and incorporates dual internal and external cooling systems.
At an average wind speed of 10 meters per second, a single unit of the turbine could produce 100 million kWh annually, sufficient to meet the annual electricity needs of 55,000 households. Each rotation of the turbine at full capacity could generate 62 kWh of electricity.
The turbine is engineered for offshore areas experiencing medium to high wind conditions, typically exceeding 8 meters per second. It is also equipped with advanced anti-corrosion and typhoon-resistant technology, making it well-suited for harsh environmental conditions.
Dongfang Electric Corporation has already installed a similar turbine at the Wind Power Equipment Testing and Certification Innovation Base in Dongying, Shandong province, China. However, it is noteworthy that there were earlier reports suggesting potential challenges with the turbine's aerodynamics and structural coupling during installation.
Despite these challenges, the 26 MW turbine developed by Dongfang Electric Corporation can generate a range of capacities from 20 MW to 26 MW, showcasing its versatility and potential for widespread application in the renewable energy sector. This development underscores Dongfang Electric's commitment to pushing the boundaries of wind energy technology and contributing to a greener future.
