"Wout Poels recollects the grueling Angliru climb, looking initially at Bradley Wiggins and then Chris Froome, as the challenge once again features in the Vuelta a España"
Wout Poels to Participate in 2025 Vuelta a España and World Championships
After announcing his participation in the 2025 Vuelta a España, Wout Poels has confirmed that he will not be competing in the Vuelta a España 2026. The Dutch cyclist, who has signed a one-year deal with XDS-Astana for the 2025 season, is aiming for a strong performance in the race, which could potentially secure him another season in the peloton.
Poels's history with the Alto de l'Angliru, a legendary climb in the Vuelta, is well-documented. In 2011, he technically became the first rider to cross the line on stage 15 after Juan José Cobo was disqualified due to doping charges. Since then, Poels has returned to the Alto de l'Angliru three times, with results including second, eighth, and fifth. His best finish on the climb was in 2017, where he guided Chris Froome up the mountain to confirm Froome's overall victory.
The 2025 Vuelta a España will see the return of the Alto de l'Angliru for stage 13. As he enters the twilight of his career, Poels is not ruling out one last magic day up the Alto de l'Angliru. He is feeling better in the second week of the race compared to the first, which bodes well for his chances.
In addition to the Vuelta a España, Poels is also targeting opportunities at the World Championships. He is part of the Dutch road race squad and will likely provide support for Thymen Arensman. Poels has faced challenges in arranging logistics and vaccinations for the World Championships, but has managed to get everything done. He is excited to represent his country at the World Championships, which will take place in a special location.
Poels's season so far has been highlighted by his win at the overall and a stage at the Tour of Turkey in 2025. As a veteran cyclist, currently amid his 25th appearance at one of cycling's prestigious three-week races, Poels is considering continuing his racing career beyond 2025, as he feels he still has the level to compete. He is also aiming for a place in the 2026 season and is looking for a contract extension with XDS-Astana.
Despite his age, Poels remains a key animator in the history of the Alto de l'Angliru. His performances on the climb have been nothing short of impressive, with finishes including fifth, second, and technically first-place (from 2023, 2017, and 2011 respectively). As he prepares for the 2025 Vuelta a España and the World Championships, cycling fans will be eagerly waiting to see if Poels can add another magic day up the Alto de l'Angliru to his illustrious career.
