Dr. William McHugh, a renowned figure in the field of dentistry, has passed away at the age of 93. Born in England and raised in Scotland, McHugh's impact on the dental world was significant and far-reaching.

After serving two years in the Royal Air Force as a Dental officer, McHugh graduated from St. Andrew's University Dental School in 1950. He began a distinguished career that combined clinical practice, teaching, and research.

McHugh's achievements were many. He was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He also served as president of the British Society of Periodontology and the American Association of Dental Research, as well as vice-president of the American Association of Dental Schools.

One of McHugh's most significant contributions was his role as the director of Eastman Dental Center from 1970-1994. During his tenure, he spearheaded the relocation of Eastman Dental to the University of Rochester Medical Center campus on Elmwood Avenue. The new Eastman Dental building was dedicated in 1978, and the close proximity fostered a relationship and eventual merger with the University.

Under McHugh's leadership, Eastman Dental flourished. He recruited distinguished faculty members such as Dr. Linda Niessen, Dr. John Smith, and Dr. Maria Gonzalez, and initiated a clinical teacher training program between the University and Eastman Dental Center. He also helped create the Department of Clinical Dentistry within the University's School of Medicine and Dentistry.

McHugh's impact extended beyond the walls of Eastman Dental. He was president of the International Association of Dental Research, and received the Distinguished Service Award of the National Institute of Lund in Sweden.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dr. McHugh's name to VNA Hospice House or Eastman Dental Center. His legacy will continue to inspire and influence the dental community for years to come.

Rest in peace, Dr. William McHugh. Your contributions to the field of dentistry will never be forgotten.
