Israel allegedly assassinates Houthi government officials in Yemen - Yemeni officials report fatal strikes against domestic Houthi militia leaders by Israel
In a series of significant events, Israel has taken decisive action against key figures in the Houthi militia in Yemen and Hamas in Gaza.
The Houthi prime minister, Al-Rahaui, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Sanaa, despite having little actual authority. The attack also claimed the life of several Houthi ministers and injured several of its members. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security service are reportedly involved in the targeted killing operation.
The Houthi government in Sanaa, which is not recognized internationally, has repeatedly attacked Israel with rockets and drones, claiming to show solidarity with the Islamist Hamas in Gaza, which is also backed by Iran. The Thursday airstrike in Sanaa demonstrates Israel's ability to surgically eliminate leaders of its main enemies in the region.
In a separate incident, the Israeli military is believed to have targeted another high-ranking Hamas official in the city of Gaza. However, the exact target remains unclear. Abu Obeida, one of the most well-known figures in Hamas, was reportedly the victim of this attack. Known for his veiled appearances in public and video messages, Abu Obeida was the military spokesperson of Hamas in Gaza.
These actions come amidst ongoing tensions between Israel and these militant groups. The Israeli military has repeatedly targeted sites in Yemen in response to these attacks. Thousands of people demonstrated in Tel Aviv, Israel, calling for an end to the Gaza war and the release of hostages from Hamas' control.
Meanwhile, the Israeli security cabinet is set to reconvene under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but a proposal for a ceasefire agreement reportedly approved by Hamas will not be on the agenda. The forum of Hostage Families called for another protest, stating that the Netanyahu government prefers an endless war over the hostages, ignoring the will of the people.
In a notable incident earlier this year, Israel's foreign intelligence agency Mossad detonated manipulated pagers and handheld radios among thousands of functionaries of the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon, killing around 40 people and injuring more than 3,000.
The Houthi group, officially known as "Ansar Allah" ("Supporters of God"), is the strongest force in Yemen, controlling the north of the country for nearly a decade. The group in Yemen has been repeatedly attacked by Israel in response to rocket and drone attacks against Israel, claiming solidarity with Hamas in Gaza.
These developments underscore the complex and volatile situation in the Middle East, with Israel taking direct action against militant groups that pose a threat to its security.
