In the heart of Essen's North District, a significant arrest was made on May 25th. A 21-year-old Syrian national, who is not a resident of Essen, was apprehended during a police check at the intersection of Kleine Stoppenberger Straße / Eltingstraße around 2:50 PM.

The suspect was initially observed by officers from the "Safe City" presence concept. His attempt to evade the police check raised suspicions, leading to a closer investigation. As the investigation unfolded, it was discovered that the man had a ban on entering certain areas due to past suspicions of drug trafficking.

During the arrest, officers found a bundle of suspected counterfeit banknotes, totaling approximately €18,000, in the 21-year-old's jacket pocket. The counterfeit money was secured, and no more was found during the search of his residence in Ratingen.

The police in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) have been conducting an investigation into the spread of counterfeit money in Essen, covering the period before the arrest and the imposed sentence. This investigation, which involves intensified efforts against organized crime including clan criminality, is led by the NRW police and supported by the Interior Ministry under Herbert Reul.

As a result of this violation, a previously threatened penalty fee will now be imposed. The arrest and subsequent investigation serve as a testament to the ongoing efforts by the authorities to combat crime and maintain the safety of the city.
