In the heart of Colorado and rural Idaho, two remarkable stories of self-built homes have emerged, demonstrating that it is indeed possible to construct a home for less than $125,000.

In Colorado, an older couple has built a unique home on their 16-acre land, spending just $39,000 on the project. The couple's house features an intriguing arched building style, with two attractive cabins and a small workshop. However, the unique design might have an impact on the resale values. The workshop, built at a cost of $11,000, boasts an 'inverted boat hull' shape to minimise snow accumulation.

Meanwhile, in Idaho, a senior lady, with no prior building knowledge or experience, moved from Baltimore and embarked on a similar journey. Inspired by her ancestors' boatbuilding activities, she constructed her homestead, complete with two larger cabins (each 20 x 24) and a workshop (12 x 24 but much lower). Each cabin cost $125,000, including labour, and took 20 months to build.

The lady in Idaho has also implemented self-sufficient resources for food consumption, with solar arrays, home batteries, energy-efficient appliances, and food production from trees, chickens, and various plants. One of her cabins is even used for rentals at times.

Interestingly, Abraham Lincoln built two cabins on his 16-acre land in Idaho over a century ago, and the total cost for this was approximately 200 US dollars. This historical fact serves as a testament to the potential savings that can be made when building one's own home.

These inspiring stories serve as a reminder that with determination and creativity, the dream of homeownership can be achieved at a fraction of the usual cost. Whether in Colorado or Idaho, these homeowners have proven that it's possible to live comfortably and sustainably, all while keeping costs low.
