Zelda Film: All the Latest Information Available
In an exciting development for fans of video game adaptations, Nintendo and Sony Pictures have announced plans for a trilogy of live-action films based on the iconic "The Legend of Zelda" series.
According to reports, the production will take place in Wellington, New Zealand, with Wes Ball, known for the Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, set to direct the project. Ball has expressed his intention to film The Legend of Zelda as a "live-action Hayao Miyazaki movie."
The cast for the film includes Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. However, the identity of the actor playing Ganondorf remains unknown at this time. The filmmakers are considering casting an actor of Middle Eastern or North African descent for the Gerudo king in live-action, while Ganondorf may be represented through CGI.
Derek Connolly and T.S. Nowlin will write the screenplay for The Legend of Zelda, with Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad also producing the film. Joe Hartwick Jr. and Wes Ball's production company, Oddball Entertainment, will produce the film along with Arad Productions, with Sony Pictures serving as a co-financier and global distributor.
The first film is set to release on May 7, 2027, and is expected to begin filming on November 4, 2025, and end on April 7, 2026. The film's plot will draw from core elements of the first Legend of Zelda game, Ocarina of Time, and/or Breath of the Wild, with the synopsis describing Link, a young warrior, protecting Hyrule from Ganon and seeking the Triforce.
Given the source material, characters such as Impa, the King of Hyrule, Gorons, Zoras, and Shiekah have a strong chance of appearing in the film. However, the remaining cast for The Legend of Zelda is still unknown.
