Zelensky Declares Detention in Connection with Parubiy's Murder, Former Speaker
Andriy Parubiy, a prominent figure in Ukraine's political landscape, was tragically shot dead in the city of Lviv on an unspecified day. The attack is now being investigated under the operation name "Operation Siren."
Parubiy, 54, served as secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council in 2014, and the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada between 2016 and 2019. He was also a key figure in the pro-European Euromaidan protests in Ukraine in 2013 and 2014.
Ukrainian authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their investigation. Lviv's head prosecutor Mykola Meret confirmed that they are exploring all angles in the case. Unverified video footage of the attack is circulating online, but the attacker remains unidentified.
According to Ukrainian prosecutors, an "unknown man" fired several shots at Parubiy before fleeing. Maksym Kozytsky, the head of the regional administration in Lviv, stated that Parubiy died before emergency services could reach the scene.
Multiple potential motives for the attack are being examined, including possible Russian involvement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder of Parubiy via his official Telegram channel.
Parubiy reportedly joined Ukraine's territorial defense in 2022. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko expressed condolences, stating that Parubiy always remained a patriot of Ukraine. Enhanced security measures will likely remain in place throughout the funeral proceedings, scheduled for Tuesday in Lviv.
The attacker was reportedly dressed as a courier for delivery company Glovo. It is not known at this time whether Maksym Kozytsky, the head of the regional administration in Lviv, was connected with the motive or the attacker.
Zelensky expressed his deepest condolences over Parubiy's death, stating that he was a true patriot who fought for Ukraine's independence and sovereignty. The president called on all Ukrainians to honour Parubiy's memory and continue the fight for a free and independent Ukraine.
