Zenit has switched out its chairman and advisor roles
Zenit St. Petersburg Appoints Konstantin Zyryanov as New Board Chairman
In a significant move for Russian football, St. Petersburg's renowned club Zenit has announced Konstantin Zyryanov as its new Chairman of the Board of Directors. Zyryanov, a former Zenit midfielder and coach, returns to the club after a brief stint as an advisor.
Zyryanov, aged 47, spent a significant part of his career at Zenit, playing for the team from 2007 to 2017, and then coaching its second team. His appointment comes after a disappointing start to the season for Zenit, who have yet to win a single match from the second to the fifth round.
The club's winning streak ended last season when they were overtaken by Krasnodar. Previously, Alexander Medvedev, who is now serving as an advisor to the chairman of the board of directors of "Zenit" and PAO "Gazprom", held the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of St. Petersburg "Zenit".
Medvedev led the club to six consecutive championships from 2019 to 2024. However, his tenure as the head of the board of directors of the hockey giant, SKA St. Petersburg, ended due to a disappointing performance in the regular season of the KHL and an early exit in the playoffs.
Zyryanov is a well-known figure in Russian football. He was among the best midfielders in Russia in the last two decades and contributed to the possible peak of the Russian national team, reaching the semi-finals of the Austria-Switzerland Euro 2008 championship.
Prior to his return to Zenit, Zyryanov worked as the coach of Novorossiysk "Chernomorets" and promoted it from the third to the second division. His appointment at Zenit in March 2024 was as an advisor to the chairman of the board.
It is unclear who will take over from Medvedev as the head of the board of directors of the basketball club "Zenit". Medvedev remains in that position currently.
Zenit's basketball club reached the final series in the previous VTB United League championship, but lost to CSKA. Despite this, the club will be hoping for a change in fortunes under Zyryanov's leadership.
As for the football team, they will be aiming to turn their poor start around and get back to the form that saw them win six consecutive championships under Medvedev's leadership. The future looks exciting for Zenit St. Petersburg under the guidance of Konstantin Zyryanov.
