Zomato food delivery worker runs into open sewer during heavy rainfall in Hyderabad; Union claims fault lies with the corporation

In a harrowing incident on August 9, 2025, Syed Farhan, a Zomato delivery boy, had a close call with death in Hyderabad, India. While on an active delivery order near TKR Kaman, Farhan fell into an open drain during heavy rains.

Luckily, Farhan did not sustain serious injuries. Residents managed to retrieve his bike from the drain before helping him climb to safety. However, his bike and mobile phone were swept away by floodwaters during the accident.

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers' Union (TGPWU) has demanded that Zomato replace Farhan's lost phone, repair his damaged bike, and compensate him for lost income. The union's founder president, Shaik Salauddin, urged companies to stop sending riders into dangerous conditions without proper safeguards.

Salauddin stated that the accident was not just an accident but a direct consequence of platforms prioritizing profits over worker safety. He also expressed concerns about the incident, stating it is a result of companies prioritizing profits over worker safety.

The union called for fair rain and surge bonuses, as well as real-time weather alerts for workers. They also appealed to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to act against companies that put riders' lives at risk.

The GHMC has issued advisories to aggregators about avoiding deliveries during extreme weather, but the union claims these warnings are often ignored. Netizens in the comments section criticized the government for the city's poor infrastructure.

A video of the accident, widely shared on social media, shows locals trying to help Farhan by throwing him a rope. Despite the union's post, it did not receive much attention.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by delivery workers in adverse weather conditions. The TGPWU continues to advocate for the safety and rights of gig and platform workers in Hyderabad.
