In a heartfelt farewell, the Heidelberg Zoo has euthanized Tiger Tebo, a beloved Sumatran tiger who had been a resident there since early 2015. Tebo, who was 16 years old, was known for his social nature and his unique fondness for curry powder.

Tebo was born in 2009 at the Naturzoo Rheine. He moved to Heidelberg in the beginning of 2015, where he quickly became a favourite among visitors. Zoo director Klaus Wünnemann confirmed Tebo's age and shared the news of his passing.

During his time at the Heidelberg Zoo, Tebo successfully raised five cubs together with tigress Karis. These offspring, now living in other zoos, are intended to contribute to the breeding program for Sumatran tigers, a critically endangered species, according to the IUCN Red List. Tebo had offspring three times with Karis.

Sumatran tigers, including Tebo, are critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. The current estimate for the number of Sumatran tigers in the wild is 600. In the wild, most tigers live for about 12 years. Despite his age, Tebo's contribution to the conservation efforts for his species will be long-lasting.

Tebo was not just a tiger, but a beloved figure at the Heidelberg Zoo. He was known for his social nature, assisting in the raising and education of cubs. One of his unique quirks was his fondness for curry powder, often rolling in the fragrant spice dust.
