Zuckerberg expresses opposition to public reading of specific book
In a recent turn of events, Meta has been directed by an emergency arbitrator to halt the publication of the memoir "Careless People" by former employee Sarah Wynn-Williams. The book, which serves as a first-person account of Wynn-Williams' experiences working at Meta from 2011 to 2017, has stirred controversy with its salacious insights into the behaviour of Meta's executives.
The ruling, however, was not issued by a judge but by an emergency arbitrator. This decision was not found on Pacer or government websites, and Meta spokesperson Andy Stone shared the ruling on Threads. Meta has stated that the claims in "Careless People" are a mix of out-of-date and false accusations about the company and its executives.
The memoir alleges several instances of inappropriate behaviour. Wynn-Williams claims that Mark Zuckerberg wanted a million people gathered for him in China to be "gently mobbed." She also alleges that Zuckerberg praised Andrew Jackson as America's greatest president because "got stuff done."
Moreover, Wynn-Williams accuses Joel Kaplan of sexual harassment during her tenure at Meta. She alleges that Kaplan emailed her repeatedly when she was deathly ill following the birth of her second child and demanded to know "where are you bleeding from?" Meta, however, investigated these allegations against Kaplan and cleared him of wrongdoing. Meta later fired Wynn-Williams for "poor performance and toxic behavior."
The book also details Meta's attempts to enter China and provides insights into the behaviour of Meta's executives. Wynn-Williams alleges that Sheryl Sandberg bought her matching lingerie and became upset when Wynn-Williams refused to share a bed with her on a 12-hour flight.
Despite the ruling, "Careless People" is currently being sold at Barnes & Noble for $5 off the cover price. It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold, as Wynn-Williams did not publicly disclose or reveal anyone related to the book outside of the tribunal proceedings, according to available information.
